Sometimes a Big needs a Little as much as a Little needs a Big.

André, a Kung Fu instructor, was making a difference in lives of youth in his classes but wanted to make more of an impact. He decided to become a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward program. André was matched with Kyle, an active and curious little guy, who had suffered emotionally due to domestic violence and physical abuse. At his lowest point, Kyle battled worrisome depressive thoughts. He was able to break free from the dark shadows of his past with the help of André, who consistently stood by Kyle’s side, with support, encouragement, guidance and friendship. Kyle began to thrive academically and socially with André in his life as a strong male role model. The tables turned last year.  Big Brother André lost his wife and found himself in a world of hurt.  Kyle and his mom showed up for André – attending his wife’s funeral, being there when needed but still allowing space to grieve, and consistently checking in.  As André healed, he continued to be a beacon of hope and positivity for his Little Brother Kyle.  Both Big and Little showed resiliency in their trials, with their strong bond holding them up.  André and Kyle’s Big/Little connection illustrates that mentoring relationships not only have a profound impact on Littles, but also on Bigs.
