Big Brothers Big Sisters Broward Adds 18 Board Members
Celebrating National Mentoring Month

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County (BBBS) has nearly doubled the size of its board, adding 18 community leaders to guide the organization’s Broward Bigger Better Stronger (BBBS) initiative, just in time for National Mentoring Month.

“We’re extremely pleased to increase the breadth and depth of our board with great community leaders who will assist us in reaching the next level,” said Malena Mendez, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “It’s so appropriate that these leaders will begin their terms during National Mentoring Month, coinciding with our Broward Bigger Better Stronger initiative, which focuses on recruiting additional Big Brother and Big Sister mentors. I couldn’t be more grateful to all of our board leadership for generously giving their time and talent to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward, led by Board Chair Chad Van Horn, Esq., added the following community leaders to its board:

Board Member Melida Akiti

Melida Akiti, Vice President, Memorial Health System/Ambulatory and Community Services

Akiti oversees Memorial Health System’s primary care initiative; eight comprehensive primary care health practices, urgent care centers, in addition to an auxiliary care laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, billing, utilization management, physician recruitment and contract negotiation.

Board Member Mark Bogan

Mark D. Bogen, Esq., Broward County District 2 Commissioner

Bogen represents residents living in Broward’s District 2, including the cities of Coconut Creek, Margate and portions of Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach and Coral Springs. As managing partner of Bogen Law Group, Bogen has practiced law for 30 years, primarily representing of condominium and homeowner associations.

Board Member David Custin

David R. Custin, President, David R. Custin & Associates (DRC Consulting)

David Custin and his team at DRC Consulting offer one-stop, comprehensive governmental relations and political campaign consulting services. Custin brings a wealth of experience to his clients, having worked in Florida’s political process since 1991 in multiple positions, including as a field/grass roots coordinator, deputy campaign manager, campaign manager and general strategic consultant.

Board Member Gabriel M. de las Salas

Gabriel De Las Salas, Esq., Managing Attorney, GMS Law, PLCC

De Las Salas, a graduate of University of Florida and Stetson University College of Law, is a sole attorney practitioner focused on aggravated insureds nationwide, personal injury, and commercial litigation.

Craig Drillich, President, Property Damage Consultants

Drillich, a 30-year veteran in insurance adjustment, established Property Damage Consultants in 2002 to assist property owners with claims. Property Damage Consultants is headquartered in Boynton Beach and licensed in more than a dozen states across the country.

Board Member Laurie Gunn

Laurie Gunn, former VP Marketing, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA)

Gunn, who spent 25 years in various roles at BBBSA culminating with VP Marketing, handled public relations, supervised marketing and volunteer staff, coordinated special event, managed annual fundraising campaigns and more.

Board Member Jerome Hutchinson

Jerome Hutchinson, Jr., Founder and Chief Servant Officer, International Career and Business Alliance, Inc (ICABA®)

Hutchinson founded ICABA®, a global, member-based, business network, to connect accomplished professionals and entrepreneurs of color to build relationships, share information and activate opportunities that enhance career, business and lifestyle success. Before launching ICABA® in 2009, Hutchinson served as General Sales Manager for three of the nation’s top five urban radio stations.

Board Member Shevrin Jones

Shevrin Jones, Florida State Senator

Jones, a teacher, nonprofit leader, and longtime public servant, has dedicated his life to serving our community. Prior to his election to the State Senate in 2020, Jones served in the Florida House from 2013-2018. From advocating and securing funding for youth mentoring, to championing legislation that increases transparency between the public and law enforcement, he consistently has fought for real change.

Board Member Sandra Juliachs

Sandra Juliachs, Broward County Market Manager, Bank of America

As Bank of America’s Broward Market Manager, Juliachs oversees Business Integration & Leadership, Community Impact, and Corporate Reputation. She previously served as the Regulatory Relationship Manager for the Bank of America’s Southeast Region. She began her career as a teller while studying for her associate degree at Florida International University.

Board Member Chelsea Koff

Chelsea Koff, Esq., Associate, Stearns, Weaver Miller

Koff, an associate in Stearns, Weaver Miller’s Litigation Department, represents clients across a wide range of commercial matters, including contract claims, business torts litigation, and regulatory matters. She also counsels clients involved in government investigations and white-collar criminal cases. Prior to joining Stearns, Weaver Miller, Chelsea was an associate in an Am Law 50 law firm and a Broward County Assistant State Attorney.

Board Member Traci Miller

Traci D. Miller, Senior Vice President/Shareholder, Miller Construction Company

Miller, who has been with Miller Construction since 1993 and became a shareholder in 2011, oversees business development and marketing, community relations, and is the champion of company culture. Traci is part of the firm’s leadership team and board of directors.

Board Member Fatima Perez

Fatima Perez, Regional Manager, State Government Affairs , Koch Industries

As Regional Manager, State Government Affairs for Koch Industries, Perez represents Koch Companies in tax, environmental, energy and regulatory issues in the Southeastern Region of the United States, including Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. Perez, with more than 15 years of experience in state government, also serves as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Mayor and Commission in Miami Beach and Tallahassee.

Board Member Al Quintana

Al Quintana, MBA, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones

With more than 25 years of experience in consulting businesses of all types and sizes, Quintana applies top quality fiscal planning and investment analysis to help corporate executives, business owners and individuals/families develop, plan and track their progress toward accomplishing their financial goals. Quintana is expert in developing business and individual retirement plans, business owner 401Ks, profit-sharing, SEP Plans, employer plan 401K rollovers and more.

Board Member Cheryl Seinfeld

Cheryl Seinfeld, President, CLS Strategies, LLC

As President and Owner of CLS Strategies, Seinfeld manages all aspects of business development, strategy, implementation and administrative duties in the areas of government affairs and political campaign fundraising. She previously was a Government Affairs Liaison for the Florida Department of Transportation and Finance Director for Connie Mack for U.S. Senate.

Board Member Ryan Sheehan

Ryan Sheehan, Director Corporate Partnerships, The Florida Panthers

Sheehan oversees a team responsible for securing corporate partners and assists in developing strategy and operations, setting goals and managing core accounts and relationships.

Board Member Ben Sorenson

Ben Sorenson, City Commissioner, City of Fort Lauderdale

Sworn in as Fort Lauderdale District 4 City Commissioner in 2018, Sorenson is passionate about making Fort Lauderdale an incredible place to live, work, play and visit. He is committed to working with neighbors in Fort Lauderdale to address issues facing the city by implementing solutions rather than just talking about problems.

Board Member Nicky Tesser

Nicky Tesser, Manager of Crewmember and Community Engagement, jetBlue

Tesser, a brand expert and marketing innovator, focuses on strategic growth and development at JetBlue. As market leader, Tesser creates and implements partnerships, promotes branded products, and markets new route launches from Fort Lauderdale. Her creativity and generosity in developing innovative promotional and marketing solutions drives ROI and increased market share for the brand.

Board Member Lorna Walker

Lorna Walker, Chief Marketing Officer, City of Miramar

Walker, a seasoned strategic leader with a track record leading enterprise-wide initiatives that deliver growth, leads marketing and communications strategies at the City of Miramar to promote the services and programs to residents and businesses. She acquired significant experience in multimedia advertising and digital marketing in previous positions at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Los Angeles Times and the Arizona Republic.
