Volunteering is a rewarding experience that both enriches the life of the giver and improves the community around them. However, not everyone can donate their time in the same ways.
If you’ve heard of the wonderful work that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County are doing but aren’t sure that you could be part of the organization yourself, you’re in luck. There are many ways to volunteer your time and defend the potential in the life of youth through BBBS Broward!
Here are just a few volunteer opportunities in your area:
A Little Time, a Lot of Good
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister mentor, or a Big as we call their volunteers, is actually less of a time commitment than most people believe. The program requires an investment of four to six hours spent with your “Little” per month each year. Even after twelve months, that only equates to a little more than two days for the entire year. Imagine how much good you can do toward positively impacting a child’s life in just those two total days of time!
Something many people do not realize is that there is a higher need in most communities for male mentors. With a much higher rate of female volunteers, BBBS programs are always searching for enthusiastic male participants to help young men find the guidance they need to succeed in life.
What you do with your Little is entirely up to you, as long as it is appropriate for their age and needs. Enjoy lunch, see a movie, go for walks, or take a tour of a local zoo or aquarium. There is so much to enjoy when you’re seeing it with someone who could be taking it all in for the first time!
More than Just Bigs and Littles
If you’re interested in volunteer opportunities in your area but aren’t sure about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, that’s okay! There are plenty of other opportunities for engagement in your community through the BBBS programs that will help both the youth we serve and the community that supports them.
Consider helping with one of our many programs or events. With so many children, attendees, sponsors, and volunteers, we are always in need of more hands to help make each event run smoothly and keep children safe while they enjoy these interactions with the public. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer in positions that are less public-facing, such as compiling gifts for holiday functions, preparing for events behind the scenes, working as part of a preparation or cleanup crew for events, and more. Whatever your interests and abilities are, there are positions available to help you make the most of them – and to serve your community with your talents and passion.
